REM Sleep

We usually get the phone call when the spouse is getting up 5-10 times a night to help their partner. They are ready to crash as no one can do that 7 nights a week (no quality REM sleep that a body needs). With Friendly Beds, the person is able to reposition themselves and go right back to sleep or get themselves in/out of bed easier for nighttime bathroom visits. Most importantly the spouse is able to get a full nights sleep again (common comment is "I got the best sleep I have had in years"). The FB Model is shipped 3 boxes on a longer pallet. It is shipped directly to our customer's home on a truck. Our customers can arrange a delivery time to make sure they are home to receive it. We ship nationwide and into Canada and most people have friends/family assemble it for them as it is fairly easy to assemble. 3 Foot Long Bed Trapeze

While we have 2 different models - Model FB with a long bed trapeze and Model TB with just a triangle trapeze. However 95% of our customers prefer the Model FB with the long bed trapeze. They enjoy grabbing anywhere on the length of the trapeze and it not moving down or adjusting when using it. It also helps them move easier across a wide bed. Both of our models allow the medical trapeze to move the length of the bed to what works best for our customer, however when pressure is applied the trapeze stays still.

How to Transfer an Individual from a Bed to Wheelchair

1. Explain to the individual that you will be assisting them into the wheelchair.

2. Position the wheelchair next to the bed facing the foot of the bed. Bring the chair as close as possible to reduce the distance of the transfer. Make sure to lock the brakes on the wheelchair and fold the foot rests up, as soon as you position it near the bed.

3. If individual is lying down, place one arm under the shoulder of the individual and the other arm supporting their thigh on the opposite side (you are facing them when doing this.). Count to three and then carefully swing their legs over the side of the bed and assist him in lifting his trunk and shoulders until he is in a sitting position. Instruct him to scoot forward until his feet are firmly on the ground.

4. Allow the individual to sit a few minutes on the side of the bed. Place sturdy shoes on the individual while he is sitting on the edge of the bed.

5. Standing directly in front of the individual, place your arms around their chest (like a bear hug).

6. Encourage the individual to place one of their arms on your shoulder and the other one braced on the bed, to assist you in lifting them.

7. Widen the position of you feet. Place your right foot forward and next to the individual’s left foot (the side to where the little toe is). Your left foot should be placed back a ways for an easy transfer of your weight as you lift the individual.

8. Slightly bend your knees and lean your body. Then instruct the individual to get ready for a push from one arm that’s extended on the bed, as you lift him up to a standing position. Count to three as you assist him to standing position and he is pushing off from the bed at the same time.

9. Raise individual to standing position and keep your back straight as you do this move. Turn the individual so that his back is positioned in front of the wheelchair. Instruct him to grasp on the armrest for additional support, and then slowly assist him as he lowers himself on the seat of the chair. Remember to bend your knees, while keeping your back straight during the assist.

10. Be sure the individual is sitting all the way back in the wheelchair, with his back against the back of the seat.

11. Lower leg rests and footrests and assist the individual in placing his feet on the platforms.

12. Unlock wheelchair prior to moving the wheelchair.

Bed Transfers

Bed transfers

The height of a bed is critical if you transfer independently. A bed that is too low is difficult to rise from. Conversely, a bed that is too high is difficult to shuffle back on and to lift the legs up on to. The firmness of the mattress will also make a difference. An old mattress or one that 'gives' under body weight, is difficult to shuffle on or get support from when pushing up to stand.

In some cases it may be difficult to find a compromise between the optimum height for the carers who are helping with personal care or nursing activities, and a suitable height for the your transfers. Height adjustable equipment is the ideal solution for this issue. This is also essential if one height is needed for getting out of bed and another for getting into it.

Hoist to bed transfers

If a hoist is used for transferring, make sure there is sufficient clearance under the bed for the hoist chassis, and that the hoist lifts to a height to adequately clear the bed.

Need for an assessment

If you are having difficulty getting on/off your bed, we recommend you arrange an assessment with an occupational therapist . It is important that you have an individual assessment as there are many factors which may affect what is appropriate for you. For example, the height which is appropriate depends on the individual.

Double Amputation: Chair to Bed Transfer

This post is for people who have had a double amputation of the lower extremities (limbs). It may take you some time to get used to using your wheelchair, especially when you move from the chair to bed. Below are tips for making the transfer from wheelchair to bed safely.

Wheelchair to bed

Wheel your chair to the side of the bed. You should be facing the side of the bed head-on (perpendicular to the bed, see picture at right).
Swing away the wheelchair’s leg rests.
Roll your wheelchair as close to the bed as possible. Try not to leave any gap between the chair and the bed. Lock the wheelchair’s brakes.
Put your hands and arms on the wheelchair’s arm rests. You will use your arms to support some of your body’s weight. “Walk” your legs forward by shifting your weight from side to side. Continue shifting and moving until you are completely on the bed. Then you can position yourself comfortably (see picture right).

Bed to wheelchair

Be sure the wheelchair is facing the bed with little or no gap between the chair and the bed. Be sure the brakes are locked.
Sit on the edge of the bed with your back toward the locked wheelchair (see picture at right).
Reach backward for the arms of the chair. Use your arms to support your weight as you lift yourself up and back into the chair.
Unlock the brakes and wheel away from the bed so you can swing the wheelchair’s leg rests back into place.

General tips

Always lock the wheelchair before any transfer.
Whether getting into or out of bed, put the wheelchair closer to the head of the bed. This makes it easier to position yourself on the bed.
Before moving in or out of bed, get rid of extra blankets or items that might get in
your way.
When scooting backwards, lean your body forward so your head is over your knees.
Try to plan the transfer so the surfaces you are moving to and from are the same height. For example, it is difficult to move from a low wheelchair to a high bed.
Use a wheelchair with anti-tipping devices.

Your physical therapist may show you other ways to make safe transfers depending on your physical condition and home setting.

General Safety Guidelines

Adapting Your Home for Parkinson's Disease Effects from Parkinson's disease , like fatigue and trouble getting around, can make daily living, including the fun stuff, tougher.

There are ways you can make your home life as easy as possible.

General Safety Guidelines:

Have emergency numbers (police, fire, poison control, and a neighbor's phone number) close by . Put them in an easily seen place, like on the fridge.

Have a phone near you at all times. Keep a cell phone in your pocket. It'll be especially important if you fall.

Make sure smoke detectors work. You should test them about once a month. If possible, get interconnected ones so if one goes off, they all go off.

Avoid space heaters and electric blankets. They're fire hazards.

How Can Tools Help?

An occupational therapist or rehabilitation specialist can recommend some equipment to make home care and daily activities more comfortable for you.

Examples of things they may suggest include:

Learn how you can get ahead of the pain.

Built-up utensils that are weighted, larger, more flexible, or have special handles
Grab bars
Devices to help you reach
Electric beds or mattresses
Sliding boards
Wheelchairs

How Can I Make My Home Easier to Live In?

Not all of these recommendations may be right for you. Your occupational therapist or rehabilitation specialist can help determine which of these are best for you.

In your living room and bedrooms:

Place furniture so that you have wide walkways. This will leave you plenty of space to move around.

If you can, make outlets easily available for lamps and appliances. If you need extension cords, make sure they're secured with tape and out of the way, so you don't trip on them.

Use chairs with straight backs, armrests, and firm seats . This will make it easier for you to get up and sit down. Firm cushions can add height and make it easier to move.

Look for lamps that you can turn on with a touch or with sound.

If possible, change your phones to ones with larger buttons. It'll make dialing easier. Have the numbers you call a lot programmed into speed dial.

Install handrails along walls, hallways, and stairwells where there is nothing to hold on to.

If you have trouble getting out of bed, see about having a stationary pole or "trapeze" bar installed. You could also try to sleep in a reclining chair .

In your bathroom:

Use an elevated toilet seat or safety rails to make it easier for you get up. Don't use towel racks or bathroom tissue holders to help you stand.

Put extended lever handles on your faucets. That'll make them easier to turn.

Put grab bars inside and outside your bathtub or shower. It'll lower your risk of a slip and fall. A bathtub transfer bench, or a shower chair with a back support can be useful, too, as can a non-skid mat or decals in the bathtub.

Get rid of small bathroom mats that may cause you to trip . A large rug that covers most of the floor with nonstick backing is a great alternative. Wall-to-wall carpeting would work best.

In your kitchen:

Have at least one counter workspace lowered so you can reach it when you're sitting.

Use an electric jar opener to loosen tough lids. Don't close jars or containers too tight when you're through with them.

Get help with lift-tab cans from an extended lever .

Use pans with a wide base. That way, you're less likely to knock them over.

When you need to cut or peel vegetables, use a food processor .

Put utensils, pots, pans, and measuring cups on a pegboard or in an accessible cupboard. Lower storage spaces force you to bend. When you do have to get things out of lower cupboards, sit.

Use a spike board to keep vegetables and fruit still so you have both hands free to peel or chop them.

Also:

Use plastic containers to avoid broken pieces.
Use a nonskid mat to keep bowls and plates steady.
Store food and beverages in small, easy-to-manage containers.
When you pour liquids, use two hands.
Use scissors to open plastic packages.
When you open boxes, use a box top opener.
Use electric appliances whenever possible.

Yes, Medicare Part B can help pay for a hospital bed and other "durable medical equipment." For Medicare to cover it, an item of equipment must be "medically necessary" and prescribed by a doctor, and it must be supplied by a medical equipment provider who is officially approved by Medicare. If it covers the bed, Medicare will pay 80 percent of its "approved" amount for its rental (after the patient meets the yearly Part B deductible of $135); the patient must pay the other 20 percent, either out-of-pocket or through Medigap or other insurance.

If the medical equipment supplier accepts "assignment" of the Medicare approved amount for the bed, it can charge the patient no more than 20 percent of that approved amount. However, if the supplier does not accept assignment, it can charge whatever it wants beyond the Medicare approved amount. So, before ordering a hospital bed, ask not only if the supplier is enrolled in Medicare but also if they are a Medicare "participating" supplier. A participating supplier is required to accept assignment of the Medicare-approved amount. A supplier that is enrolled in Medicare, but isn't "participating," might accept assignment but isn't required to. If you are considering using a supplier who is not "participating," ask ahead of time if they will accept assignment for your claim. If not, look for another supplier.

Home Safety

Parkinson’s disease (PD) can affect mobility. For example, PD-related tripping or “freezing” episodes can lead to sudden loss of balance and falls. Creating a safer home environment can lower the risk of PD-related falls and injury.

See the following tips and consider asking your doctor for a Home Safety Evaluation — an in-home occupational therapist safety assessment — to make your home safer.

Home Safety Tour Checklist

Clear clutter and follow a Home Safety Considerations checklist to ease movement in the home and ensure that your home is safe and easily accessible.

Throughout the House

Floors should be stable with non-skid surfaces. Avoid excessive patterns.
All furniture is secure, sturdy and does not swivel.
Chairs are stable, have arm rests and adequate seat height to make standing up easier.
Good lighting throughout the home minimizes dark or shadowy areas. Adjust blinds and shades to minimize glare.
Wide walking paths allow easy access and the use of a walker or wheelchair, if needed.
Electrical, phone or computer cords should be out of the way so as to not become a tripping or fall risk while walking and moving.
Stairs are in good shape, have railings and can be blocked for safety if needed.
Dining area is easily accessible.
Smoke alarms are installed in all rooms (especially bedroom and kitchen), with fully charged batteries.

TO DO

Remove throw rugs or scatter rugs.
Remove clutter to decrease risk of tripping and falls.

Bedroom

Create a quiet, relaxing environment.
Raise bed height to allow feet to touch floor when seated at bedside.
Use a half side rail or bed pole to help with rolling and getting up.
Make lighting easily accessible, to avoid walking around the room in the dark.
Place lamps where they can be easily turned on and off.
Use a bright nightlight to fully light the way to the bathroom.
Place a flashlight by your bed in case of a power outage.
Make a bedside commode or urinal available for nighttime use if needed.
Place clothing rods at an easy-to-reach height, ensure the closet is well-lit and clothes are in dressers that allow access without stooping or bending.
Use smooth carpets and rugs to create a safe walking surface and minimize falls.
Place a telephone and clock on the nightstand for easy nighttime access.

TO DO

Place slippery fabric or a draw sheet on the middle third of the bed to make rolling easier.
Remove the top sheet. Instead, use a lightweight comforter.
Avoid flannel sheets and nightwear.

Bathroom

Most falls take place in the bathroom because of difficulty getting on and off the toilet and in and out of the tub; difficulty seeing due to poor lighting; slipping on wet surfaces; tripping on throw rugs; or getting dizzy while standing from the toilet to the sink. Make sure the following safety measures are in place, and check the Bathing & Grooming page for more details.

Install grab bars near the toilet, tub and shower: no location should require use of towel racks, faucets or soap dishes as grab bars.
Ensure the toilet has an elevated seat and arm rests or grab bar within easy reach.
Add a sturdy bench with back support to the tub or shower for safety.
Make seating available to perform tasks such as brushing teeth or shaving.
Place light switches near the door to avoid walking into a dark area.
Keep floors unwaxed and debris free.

Kitchen

Cooking is often a multi-step process. People living with Parkinson’s may have difficulty safely managing kitchen tasks. Balance changes can make opening refrigerator and oven doors harder and falls can occur when trying to reach high shelves or carry objects from counter to table. Try these tips to use your kitchen in a safe, manageable way.

Install cabinet handles rather than knobs to make it easier to open and close cupboard doors.
Store commonly used items in easily accessible drawers to avoid the need to reach or bend over to find them.
Place items used for cooking, such as spices, pots and pans, near the stove to avoid reaching over the stove, which may cause burns.
Use a single handle sink faucet, which is easier to control and turn on and off.

TO DO

Grab items on high shelves with a long-handled reacher.

Stairway

Ensure that there is adequate lighting on steps.
Steps should be non-skid surfaces.
Install handrails on at least one side of the steps. Handrails two to three inches from the wall permit good grasp.
If you cannot use a walker, cane or mobility aid on the steps, make sure you have two: keep one at the bottom of the stairs and one at the top of the stairs.
Install a ramp over the steps when possible if you cannot safely climb steps.

TO DO

Keep steps clutter free.
Put brightly colored tape on the top and bottom steps to signal the beginning and end of the steps.

General Safety

Use of power tools
Tremor combined with balance and coordination changes can impact safe use of power tools, even if you have used them for a long time. Slowed reaction time can also lead to safety concerns. Consider all these factors when deciding if using power tools is safe for you.

Climbing
PD-related reductions in balance skills and protective reflexes increase fall risk. Avoid climbing, whether on ladders, step stools or chairs.
